E39 Warning Triangle

NOTE: Perform these steps at your own risk. All P/N's listed are a "best guess", so please double-check with your local dealer. These mods and repairs were performed on my US-Spec 1997 540iA (11/96 prod date, M62 engine) but there is no guarantee they will work on other E39's. These instructions are provided for entertainment purposes only!

BACKGROUND: After a tireless search, I located the elusive Euro-spec warning triangle that BMW deletes from all US-bound E39's. Unless your vehicle was Euro-Delivered and you knew in advance to remove the warning triangle and first aid kit prior to shipping, you most likely have a large empty spot in your tool tray. Warning triangles aren't required in US-spec cars and I heard of some issue about warning triangles having to withstand a certain wind speed for DOT approval. Some owners will still want it to "complete" the car.

Ordering thru most US dealers is not an option as the part will never make it over from Germany based on my experience with PacificBMW. One source for the older-style triangle I have good recommendations for is LeatherZ. I'm unsure of a good source for the newer-style triangle.

BMW is nice enough to include a pic of what's missing on the outside of their tool tray. :-)

Please note that the P/N's below are very subjective since they are technically Euro-only. Tool tray differences over the years might affect fitment.

Required Parts:
This before and after pic applies to pre-05/00 owners and is a good reference to see if the first P/N listed above will fit properly. Be sure to compare it with your tool tray prior to finding/ordering the triangle.

This pic should apply to 05/00+ owners.
